Director of Communications - Christ United Methodist Church - August 2008
POSITION SUMMARY The Director of Communications will work under the supervision of the Pastor on external/internal communications and marketing opportunities with the primary directive to evangelize our community (and world) and to help facilitate growth of the Christ Church family. This includes developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy for effectively telling the stories of CUMC, its people, its programs, and its special events, as well as shaping the CUMC brand in all communications pieces and providing leadership to the communications volunteers. This person will also provide creative counsel and direction for various ministries of the church as they organize and produce various events and services. POSITION REPORTING This is a part-time staff position reporting to the Pastor. A typical schedule provides for professional flexibility with infrequent required evening and weekend responsibilities. The Director of Communications should be able to attend a weekly one-hour staff meeting, but the majority of the work can be completed off-site. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES • Oversee the development of all external communication media (print, broadcast, direct mail, audio-tape, and video production) from Christ Church to the church family and the community • Oversee internal communications including but not limited to the ongoing improvement of communication between the CUMC staff and the CUMC family; effective e-mail, developing an electronic newsletter and weekly email of announcements from the newsletter and bulletin, effective worship graphics and presentations. This may also include management of signage in and around CUMC property. • Build volunteer teams of creative professionals to help counsel and direct the overall media/communications effort. • Oversee the development of a video production ministry. • Oversee the production of all print media of the church (with exception of the church bulletin) from layout and design to production and distribution. • Oversee the design and management of the jacksoncumc.org web site and continue to seek new technologies and opportunities to improve the effectiveness of web-related communication with all ministries. • Oversee the implementation of a comprehensive publicity/media plan for major church events (special speakers, concerts, drama, activities) • Serve as creative/communications/marketing counselor for other CUMC ministries and organizations as they seek to effectively reach and communicate with specific people-groups. • Oversee the regular evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of church communication channels and vehicles and develop and implement plans for improvement. • Develop an annual plan by identifying newsworthy activities, working to develop calendar. • Maintain church bulletin boards to keep current. • Demonstrate a commitment to Jesus Christ, and to the vision, values, and culture of Christ United Methodist Church.
POSITION PROFILE AND QUALIFICATIONS A committed Christian with a record of service that reflects a love for the Lord Jesus Christ. Believes that their work is not just a job but also a ministry, and that their efforts support the evangelistic outreach, ministry, mission and strategic vision of the entire church. Able to represent the church and fellow staff members to others in the church and in the community, from all walks and places in life, in a Christ-like manner. Knowledge of, and proven track record in, marketing, advertising, strategic communications, and/or public relations principles. Excellent oral and written communications skills, with an eye for detail and commitment to creative excellence. Proven leadership and relational skills; able to establish rapport with CUMC staff, members, and volunteers. Excellent project management skills and ability to multi-task several projects at the same time. Ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances and a strong commitment to meeting deadlines. Ability to motivate, encourage, lead, and mentor staff. Preferred software experience: Adobe InDesign or PageMaker, Adobe Acrobat, and Photoshop, Adobe DreamWeaver, Audacity, PowerPoint, Microsoft Office products, and beginning level video production/slideshow software; proficiency in Windows operating systems.
